2004 Border OlympicsMarch 5-6, Laredo
The moon shone on a perfect Friday evening for track and field in Laredo. Thanks to Nick Villareal for this report. FAT timing. The weather couldn't have been better for 73rd edition of this meet. Since it's beginning in 1932 as the International Frontier Olympics, the meet has long been a major early season competition for both high schools and colleges. Things like a new scoreboard with video of the events and a spirited announcer who made each event exciting play a role in making this a very unique and entertaining meet. After years of decline in the college division, the return of Texas A&M and the University of Texas to Laredo was a good sign in elevating this meet to the prominence it once held. The Eagle Pass boys team was particularly impressive with a dominating team victory. Matthew Stall (Cuero) looked very good in winning the pole vault and Alex Vasquez (Del Rio) ran away with the 400 field. Austin Westlake's girls squad was simply boring again -- same ol' Westlake, same ol' great team! The Lady Chaps were are strong in nearly every event as they are every year as they won by over 30 points. While the the Hearn sisters of St. Augustine swept the middle distance races, the most dominating performance of the meet was Daniela Esquivel's 30-meter win in the 400.
