UIL State Championships

November 9, Old Settlers Park, Round Rock

Wow! What a day! While it was a beautiful day for spectators, it turned out to be a very challenging experience for a great many athletes who had to deal with temperatures in the mid-80's by the end of the meet. Several favorites — both teams and individuals — saw their championship hopes dashed by the heat. But everyone had to un in the same heat and those who ran well overcame the same challenges as those who didn't.

A special thanks goes out to UIL Athletic Coordinator, Peter Contreras, and Round Rock McNeil coaches Glenn Roberts and Traci Neely who did a wonderful job putting on such a massive event. While there is always something to complain about at any meet, it's amazing the job they and everyone involved with putting on the meet does considering all the thousands of details that have to be dealt with.

I was, however, extremely disappointed with what was done to promote the meet through the media. It was as if the UIL did not care to promote the meet and the athletes at all. Indeed, it seemed as if someone was seeking to make it difficult to provide coverage. After requesting media credentials, I had to make a call on Friday to find out how to pick them up. After waiting in a long line as directed by the UIL's Public Information Director, I found out credentials were not even where she'd said and I had to go somewhere else. As the day progressed it became clear that media credentials were worthless since:

the UIL provided no press materials such as entry lists/bib numbers for matching photos with names;

bullet

access to the finish area for photos was denied — I was told only "official UIL" photographers had access so I was not able to get any finish photos;

bullet

meet results were not even provided — after requesting results at the conclusion of the meet I was told to get them off their website so I was unable to do any work going home after the meet; when I noted that the website was incorrect last year and that I was concerned about getting accurate results, an official guaranteed that website results were the same as the official results being printed for coaches. Guess what — it took over three days and two corrections to get the correct results posted on the UIL website!
